“We can bring it back!” How Ratty and friends are campaigning for Britain’s wildlife

We’ve recently started working in partnership with the fantastic Cheshire Wildlife Trust, and have so much respect for the incredible work they do to preserve and protect our natural heritage.

The Trust’s new national campaign, #WilderFuture, has created a really though-provoking short film about the impact we humans are having on Britain’s wildlife. They’ve teamed up with some famous names, including David Attenborough, Stephen Fry and Catherine Tate. They’ve made a Wind in the Willows inspired video

that rapidly turns from cute to scary – and ends with a message of hope.

Much-loved characters Ratty, Mole, Badger and Toad return to the riverbank – to find their former idyll transformed into a dystopian wasteland of rubbish and pollution. And scarily, this is how Britain’s riverbanks will end up if we don’t change the way we treat our landscape and its wildlife.

“The UK has become one of the most nature-depleted places on the planet”, says the narrator, Sir David Attenborough.

“But we can bring it back”, Stephen Fry’s Badger wisely tells us.

As the short film tells us, we can make a difference and help nature recover from our human errors. The campaign calls for us to “take individual action where we live” to support our local wildlife. One of the ways we can prevent the destruction of Britain’s wildlife is by embracing how we manage waste.

Naturally, the work of the Wildlife Trusts is close to our hearts at Kenny Waste Management. We’ve recently been working with the Cheshire Wildlife Trust, providing waste wood for their Create for Nature project. We’ve also been planting trees with the Woodland Trust to offset our carbon emissions – another way we humans can help reverse the damage we’ve caused to wildlife.

At Kenny Waste Management, we’ve practised (and preached) landfill diversion and recycling for years; and hopefully if regulations continue to be tightened, our zero-landfill aims will become a UK-wide goal. By contributing to the Parliamentary Review, we have the opportunity to share our rigorous standards and recommendations with decision makers and industry leaders.

Because none of us want to see Ratty, or his real-life friends, made homeless.
